내가 몇년동안 제일 좋아했던 성탄 음악은 O Come O Come Emmanuel 이었다. (한국어로는 곧 오소서 임마누엘)

이 곡이 좋았던 이유는 성탄을 맞이하면서 메시아를 기다리는 간절함이 잘 녹아있다고 느꼈기 때문이었다.

한편 성탄은 그 분위기가 밝고 들뜬 것이기도 하지만,
언젠가부터 성탄은 안타깝고 힘든 세상 속에서 소망을 가지려고 몸부림치는 사람들에게 오신 예수님에 대한 생각이 더 간절해 졌다.

그러다보니 이런 tone과 가사의 성탄 음악이 내 마음에 훨씬 잘 담기는 것이었다.
성탄은 충분히 우울할 수 있다. 성탄에 충분히 어두운 마음을 가지고 있을 수 있다.
아직 세상이 망가져 있기 때문에.

원래 영어의 버전은 훨씬 길다. 자그마치 7절까지 있는데,
영어로도 7절까지 교회에서 다 불러본 적은 없었던 것 같다.
그래도 참 가사가 좋다.

that mourns in lonely exile here
until the Son of God appear.
